RTX A4000 16GB: Used Price & Value for AI in 2026
On pure value the NVIDIA RTX A4000 is a poor buy for local AI, and it is worth saying that first. At $800 for 16GB you are paying $50.00/GB, while a Tesla P40 gives you 24GB at $9.96/GB. If your only constraint is VRAM per dollar, stop reading and buy the P40.
The A4000 exists for people whose constraint is something else: physical space, power, noise, or the need for display output. It is a single-slot, 140W, actively-cooled card with four DisplayPorts and no external power connector beyond a single 6-pin. Nothing else with 16GB does all of that, and if that is your situation the comparison changes entirely.

The A4000 loses the $/GB column decisively, and it is the wrong column to read if you are buying this card. What it wins is the last two: one slot, 140W, active cooling, four display outputs. Every cheaper option on this table is either a passive datacenter card with no display out that needs an aftermarket fan and two slots of clearance, or a consumer card with less VRAM.
Who this card is actually for
Four situations where the A4000 is the right answer rather than an expensive one:
- Small-form-factor builds. One slot, full height. In an SFF case or a low-profile workstation there is often no physical room for a dual-slot card plus a fan shroud.
- Dense multi-GPU. Single slot means four of them fit where two P40s plus cooling would. 64GB of ECC VRAM across four cards at 560W total is a real configuration; the same with P40s is not.
- A machine that also drives monitors. Four DisplayPorts and one card. With a P40 or P100 you need a second GPU just for video.
- Power or thermal limits. 140W and no extra power connector beyond a 6-pin. On a small PSU, or in a room where 250W of passive card plus a screaming 92mm fan is unacceptable, this matters more than $/GB.
What 16GB runs
16GB with native BF16 tensor cores is a comfortable spot for small models and a hard ceiling for large ones:
- Llama 3 8B (Q4-Q8): fits easily with generous context. The natural use case.
- Llama 3 14B (Q4-Q6): fits with usable context.
- Qwen 2.5 14B (Q6): comfortable, good quality.
- LoRA / QLoRA fine-tuning on 7B: works, and the 3rd-gen tensor cores with native BF16 make this materially better than any Pascal card. This is the A4000's other genuine advantage.
- 32B at Q4: does not fit. You need 24GB.
- Llama 3 70B: not at any quantization.
Bandwidth is the quiet limit
448 GB/s is respectable but below the $80 P100's 732 GB/s. Since token generation is bandwidth-bound, a P100 will generate faster on any model that fits in both cards. The A4000 wins on tensor cores, FP16/BF16 support, power, form factor and display output. Not on raw inference speed at the same VRAM.
Buying notes
- Slug and naming: sold as both "RTX A4000" and "A4000". Do not confuse it with the much older Quadro P4000, or with the RTX 4000 Ada (a different, newer card).
- ECC memory is on by default. It costs a little bandwidth and is usually worth keeping for long training runs.
- The blower is audible under sustained load, quieter than an aftermarket fan on a passive card, but not silent.
- Check the price against the live listings rather than trusting the figure in this sentence. Used professional cards move less predictably than consumer ones, and supply is thinner.
Verdict
A constraints card, not a value card
At $800 and $50.00/GB the RTX A4000 is poor value measured the way this site usually measures things. A P40 at $239 gives you 50% more VRAM for a third of the price, and a P100 at $80 gives you the same 16GB and generates tokens faster.
Buy it anyway if your build has a constraint those cards cannot satisfy: one slot, 140W, active cooling, display output, or four cards in a chassis. Those are real constraints and the A4000 is the cleanest 16GB answer to them. Add native BF16 tensor cores if you intend to fine-tune, and the case gets stronger still.
If you have a normal tower with spare slots and a decent PSU, you are paying a premium for engineering you will not use. Buy the P40 or the P100 instead.
